Significance of February 14

The article deals with the origination of Valentine's Day and how eventually it was popularised from the prison cell. However, February 14 has an importance in the Indian freedom struggle too, which forever ended the possibilities of a revolution.

PEOPLE IN England probably celebrated Valentine's Day as early as the 1400's.  Some historians trace the custom of sending verses on Valentine's Day to a Frenchman named Charles, Duke of Orleans. Charles was captured by the English during the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.  He was taken to England and put in prison.  On Valentine's Day, he sent his wife a rhymed love letter from his cell in the Tower of London.
Many Valentine's Day customs involved ways that single women could learn who their future husbands would be.  Englishwomen of the 1700's wrote men's names on scraps of paper, rolled each in a little piece of clay, and dropped them all into water.  The first paper that rose to the surface supposedly had the name of a woman's true love.
As far as India is concerned hardly few are aware about the fact that on February 14 1931, legendry Bhagat Singh,Rajguru and Sukhdev were ordered  by court to hang them till  death. But today we do not know even remmber their names. We only celebrate this day as lovers day . Shaheed Bhagat Singh was the hero of freedom struggle in india, great freedom fighter of Punjab, great freedom fighter of India, true freedom fighter of  the nation. For sake of country he sacrificed his life in the tender age of 23 only (birth 27th sep 1907).
He gave a new direction to revolutionary movement in India, formed 'Naujavan Bharat Sabha' to spread the message of revolution in Punjab, formed 'Hindustan Samajvadi  Prajatantra Sangha' along with Chandrasekhar Azad to establish a republic in India, assassinated police official Saunders to  avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, dropped bomb in Central Legislative Assembly along with Batukeshwar Dutt. Ultimately Bhagat Singh and his associates were hanged in the early hours of March 23, 1931.
