On the occasion of the Teachers' Day on September 5, Prime Minister Narendera Modi had released the manual of the project 'Clean school, Clean India' for the schools, individuals and organization who wish to implement or support the project.
Under the Narendra Modi government's 'Swach Vidyalaya, Swach Bharat' (Clean school, Clean India) initiative, the MHRD has posted on the internet the mapping of schools without toilets till the block level in the country for the individuals or organizations, who would like to build toilets for schools.
On the occasion of Independence Day last month, Narendra Modi, had called upon people to create a clean India and had promised toilets in all schools. "Mahatma Gandhi laid great emphasis on cleanliness. His ashrams too focused on the same. Let us pledge we will give a 'Clean India' as a gift to our father of the nation on his 150th birth anniversary in 2019," he had said then.
It would be pertinent to mention about the dismal state of affairs of toilet facilities in Odisha. According to status of Elementary and Secondary Education in Odisha-2012, a report prepared by Odisha Primary Education Programme Authority (OPEPA) released in January this year, of the total 53,193 elementary schools (up to class VIII), 12,588 schools had no functional toilets.
