SWAMI DEEKSHANAND SARASWATI : AN EMINENT SCHOLAR-SPEAKER
By Brigadier Chitranjan Sawant,VSM
Indeed an impressive personality he was both in appearance and in scholarly parleys. There was hardly a soul who met him and returned without gaining Vedic knowledge. Although I had heard his scholarly discourses in various annual functions of different Arya Samajes of Northern India, it was in the Dun valley that I have had an opportunity to know him from close quarters. After many meetings with him and person to person interaction I found that I had gained tremendously spiritually. Thereafter I yearned to have his spiritual company whenever an opportunity came my way.
Dronsthali Arsh Kanya Gurukul, Kishangang canal road, Dehra Dun is the name of the place where I have had an opportunity to hear him morning and evening in the Sabhagar during the three day annual function of the Kanya Gurukul.
Dr Ved Prakash Arya, kulpita and founder of that august institution, as well as Acharya Dr Annapoorna Ji were successful in persuading Swami Deekshanand Ji to come to the Doon valley and interact with the large number of Arya Samajists who assemble there year after year for the last one decade or so. Swami Deekshanand Ji mentioned in one of his informal chats that generally he ascertains the credibility of the institution and assesses the quality and number of listeners of his discourses before giving his nod to his active participation. However, in this case he was convinced of the sincerity of the hosts and their genuine interest in furthering the cause of Vedic education and hence agreed to be a part of the mission of Dayanand Saraswati. Indeed Swami Deekshanand Saraswati was a true crusader to preach the Vedic Dharm as enunciated by Swami Dayanand Saraswati.
I was elated when Swami Deekshanand Ji sent a message that he too would like to attend the TV documentary show on Maharishi Dayanand that the Doordarshan Delhi Kendra had produced and I had scripted and done the running commentary in Hindi. The documentary comprised a number of bytes of the Delhi based eminent Aryas and the whole thing was put together rather hurriedly. On seeing the TV documentary Swami Deekshanand Ji was rather disappointed. Being a gentleman to his finger tips, he made no scathing criticism on the spot in the presence of the large audience but suggested mildly that some more Research was needed to put up an impressive show. Indeed that was his inoffensive but effective way of speaking his mind on a given issue. Truly it was expected of an Arya Sanyasi not to lose his cool. Swami Deekshanand was always a calm, cool and collected man of a personality that made deep impressions on all those who came in contact with him.
Besides reading, writing and publishing his own thoughts, Swami Deekshanand Ji took upon himself to republish books of sterling worth written by Arya Samaj leaders of yore. " YOGESHWAR SHRI KRISHNA" written by pt Chamupati, M.A. Acharya of Gurukul Kangri, Haridwar was a fine biography of our beau ideal and morale booster, Shri Krishna Chandra Ji. The book was popular when published first time but had gone out of print later. Swami Deekshanand Ji took upon himself to republish it and sell at a subsidised price to enable all sections of the society to buy and own a copy. Likewise he published some other works of importance too.
Swami Deekshanand had founded an Ashram in Sahibabad near Noida and operated from there. He had no resident students or disciples there as that would have hindered the smooth flow of Prachar Karya that he was engaged in. Before his demise, he had gifted the Ashram and his rich library to the Savadeshik Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Delhi and requested its Pradhan, Capt Deo Ratna Arya to carry on the mission of Dayanand from there as he had been doing heretofore. I regret to say that after his demise, things were not the same.
Swami Deekshanand Ji was in great demand by eminent colleges and universities too to preach the Vedic Dharm and help the youth in staying on course. Many adverse influences, both home made and imported from the West, were instrumental in letting the young boys and girls go astray. Swami Deekshanand Ji made his contribution to the cause and bringing the youth back on rails.
Swami Deekshanand Ji was invited by Dr Ashok Chauhan at the inauguration ceremony of the Amity University to shower his blessings and exhort both the high and mighty as well as the common man to stay on course and resist being swept away by the glamour of riches and flashy way of life. The educationist had listened to him with rapt attention and were benefitted by his short but sweet discourse. Swami Deekshanand Ji had been suffering from acute back pain for some time. One day I ventured to ask him how the pain started in his well looked after body, mind and soul. He mentioned of a minor accident when the driver of a car sent to fetch him for an important function jumped across speed breakers in his car-cum-flying machine. That did an untold damage to his spine in that advanced age. Life was never the same again.
Swami Deekshanand Ji is not with us in this world today but I am confident that his soul must have found another deserving body to carry on the good work for the humanity that he had been doing heretofore.
