The Agriculture Department is continuously making efforts to to increase the income of the farmers by motivating them to have third crop after the wheat harvesting and before the sowing of paddy like pulses, vegetables etc. The glaring example is of a farmer of Buttar Sharih village in Muktsar District of Punjab, who had third crop of Melon (cucurbita melo).

This was disclosed by Dr.Beant Singh, District Agri. Officer when Dr.Mukhtiar Singh, Dr.Kabal Singh, Dr.Gaganjit Singh Mann were also present.

Dr. Beant Singh said, the agriculture fields remained vacant between April and July, after the harvesting of wheat and sowing of basmati.  During this period, the farmers could cultivate moong pulse of summer or sow 'jantar' for preparing green fertilizer apart from short time ripening vegetables.

Similarly, on the guidance of Agri. Department, Hardip Singh farmer of village Buttar Sharih has the cultivated the third crop of melon in seven acres and earned Rs.15000 to Rs.20000 during the non-cultivation period.  Now when he will plough the residues of the third crop, these will work as green fertilizer for the next crop.

Appealing to the farmers, Dr.Beant Singh said, they should keep in touch with the Agri. Department which not only gave the technical knowledge to the farmers but helps them in various other activities. He said, for any advice relating to agriculture, they can contact the block agriculture offices.
