TIME FOR SUPREME COURT/NHRC TO ACT

MADHU AGRAWAL

Supreme Court and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) should take sue-motto cognizance of public-insult of slain Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s family by Kerala Chief Minister whereby VS Achutanandan commented that not even a dog would have gone to the house if it was not Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s house. Were all those having gone to Sandeep’s house to attend martyr’s funeral had status of being even less than dogs? What more, Achutanandan declined to regret his comments despite requests from his party-cadres.

Otherwise also, visit of VS Achutanandan to Unnikrishnan’s house resulted in crushing human rights of Sandeep’s father when he had made special request especially to politicians for not coming to pay condolence for at least some time when the family had a recent shock by death of the young family member.

At such crucial time, it is necessary that Supreme Court/National Human Rights Commission may defend honour of martyrs and public in general together with right of family-members of the slain Major to bear grief silently, by acting against political rulers like VS Achutanandan for sending a strong lesson for other unruly politicians.
