Condoling the death of Amitabha Chowdhury - Bengali journalist, writer and scholar - who worked for three decades with many leading newspapers of West Bengal such as Jugantar, Anandabazar Patrika and Aajkaal, the President of India Pranab Mukherjee in his released message said, "I pray to the Almighty to give you and other members of your family the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss."
"Shri Chowdhury was not only a student and teacher in Visva Bharati but also a highly regarded scholar of the life and works of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, having authored over 60 books and articles on the subject. He attained widespread popularity for his limericks on political and cultural issues," added Mukherjee while mentioning about Chowdhary's excellent reporting on individual rights and community interests that got him Ramon Magsaysay Award and Padamasgri hounour.
Chowdhury passed away at his south Kolkata residence early on Friday morning following a prolonged illness at 88. Some of his books on Tagore such as Jamidar Rabindranath, Rabindranather Paralok Charcha and Rabindranather Asukh-Bisukh were well received along with otherworks of fiction. He was also admired for wit and humour in his writing skills.
