What Independence Day means for Poor People?
Satbir Singh Bedi | 12 Apr 2013

it was Independence Day and I like all middle class people was enjoying our independence. Children of our colony were flying kites. But what about poor people? About 40% of our people are below poverty line and they do not know the meaning of independence. Some of them remember Independence Day as a Kite Flying Day. Naturally so because they are not literate. What to talk of literacy, they do not get even two square meals a day. Some of them are even without clothes. Independence for them has no meaning. Meanwhile the rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer. This disease of poverty is eating our country like termite eats the wood. Naxalism, maoism, terrorism etc. are all symptoms of this pernicious disease called poverty. The poverty is increasing because poor people are breeding like rabbits as they have no other source of entertainment and also because they feel that they are adding an earning member to their family when a child is born to them and this growing population is eating up the country. The rich people who according to Gandhiji are trustee of wealth should see the writing on the wall and start sharing their wealth with the poor people before it becomes too late.
