What is a Chair?
Anjuli Jain | 26 Mar 2007

It is a poem written in the form of a satire. It comprises various views that people of various categories hold about a chair.

What is a Chair?

A chair is an article on which we sit,
Replied a very, very innocent kid;
It is a non living thing, simple or artistic,
Made of wood, iron or plastic.

A chair is a chair, replied a common’aire
The root cause of all kinds of warfare,
On which many ambitious eyes are fixed
All stories in this world are related to it.

It is a piece of furniture
With a miraculous nature,
With four legs, a back and a hot seat,
A hot seat, an eminent person did repeat.

We, the poor in a remote land, know not of a chair of any type
Except the ones that descend from the skies,
Join their hands and bow before our eyes;
Distribute some peanuts, disappear, till the next election cries.

It is not just an object to sit but a throne,
On which, I sat all alone, all alone;
Intoxicating, rejuvenating, experience life-time,
From where I served the needy in line.

I am a chair,
Surrounded by a species rare
Who rock me, roll me, take care
And keep me lifted in the air.

Very, very few are those who grace me
Rest just misuse and disgrace me;
Seldom am I known by those who adorn me
Lest I adorn those who usurp me.

I am a chair
Surrounded by a species rare
Who rock me, roll me, take care
And keep me lifted in the air.
