  Is Pakistan a failed state?

The dastardly terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in the heart of Lahore has laid bare the chinks (read chasms) on the armour of the Pakistani government. Though the Punjab governor likened the Lahore terror attack of 3/3 with that of the Mumbai terror attack of 26/11, the Pakistani government is, once again, in a denial mode. The familiar flip-flops, statements and counter statements, lead to obfuscation. There were statements from the attackers being Filipino, Nepali or Indian, to the possibility of it being an LTTE attack. The Zardari government is acting like the proverbial ostrich, with its head safely buried in the sand. Though the Pakistani government sold its soul to the Taliban in Swat to buy peace, paying them a hefty sum, it has hardly helped them. It’s busier stifling the voice of the Nawaz brothers, the littlest opposition, throttling even the bare semblance of democracy. Cricket, the second religion of Pakistan has received the severest of blows. Persuading teams to come to Pakistan is now out of the question. Australia, India, New Zealand and England had canceled tours in recent years because of security concerns after 9/11 and a bomb that went off near the touring Kiwi team's hotel in 2002. Sri Lanka was the only major opposition to venture out. Sadly, they too have been hit badly, with six players receiving shrapnel injuries. It’s high time that the world took notice of all this. India and other countries should create diplomatic pressure and raise the demand of declaring Pakistan a failed state (like Somalia). What do you think? Is Pakistan is a failed state?

whole world agrees. Pakistan naturally will disagree.
VRS : Jul 28, 2009
The events since its inception till date vindicate that it was formed on wrong hypothesis. It sustains on anti-India mindset thus lost its focus and objective be a civilised society.
R. S. Gill : Mar 17, 2009
i am in sync with the views expressed in the article. The Zardari government has no control on terrorism. Pakistan has become a blot for Pakistanis as well as to the whole world. The government should take strict measure to check such dastardly act.
Ravindra : Mar 14, 2009
It is entirely government responsibility who failed to control its terror bases. It is worst situation for pakistan, if this gonna continue then surely it will lose a grip from its neighbouring countries.Still there is no urgency called on this issue in pak, surely its failing in its respects from other countries...
journipro20 : Mar 14, 2009
If I Would Be American President Than I totally Destroyed Taliban And With That Pakistan Too.
Anand : Mar 14, 2009
Well i think that pakistan needs develop itself. It can be called as a failed state becoz not only economically but also politically it has shown its unconcerned behaviour and this is coolly proved after this attack in lahore.
shruti dua : Mar 13, 2009
NO, IT IS NOT TRUE. MAY BE PAKISTAN IS PASSING THROUGH HARD TIMES. IT WOULD BE BETTER IF PAKISTAN MEND ITS WAYS TO IMPROVE RELATION WITH NEIGHBOURS.
V S GOOMBER : Mar 13, 2009
I THINK PAKISTAN NEED SOME FOREIGN INTELLIGENT IN SECURITY DEPT FROM USA OR ENGLAND TO SOLVE THEIR GROWING PROBLEMS OF TERRORIST ATTACK ESPECIALLY FROM TALIBAN.
RAMBO : Mar 13, 2009
Definitely. With the Lahore attack on the SL attack, Pak proved it does not even know the meaning of hospitality.
Ratnadeep : Mar 12, 2009
MADHU AGRAWAL : Mar 10, 2009
See, the attack on SriLankan Cricket Team is not a measure of the amount of failure. Not only Pakistan, any state for that matter, which does not put breaks on: 1. Religious Leader's powers 2. Militiary's freedom is bound to fail sooner or latter.

I think we all will be shown early a taliban in Pakistan
Snehanshu Pal : Mar 09, 2009
yes indeed pak is a failed state in all terms. Not only in Politics but economic, civil rights as well as sports too. There is no government that people can trust.
K.Shahid : Mar 09, 2009
Well written. Pakistan's slide began the moment Pervez Musharraf took over. His flirtations with the Taliban created the right background for the Taliban to make deep inroads into Pakistan. Also, thanks to USA and it's allies, Aghanisthan has become a harder place for the Taliban. In Pakistan the Taliban can not only blend rather easily with the local population, they can find enough foreign targets to practice their "skills". That Pakistan should have permitted matters to reach this far indicates a total lack of control over the situation. If the police run away from a ongoing attack, how can Pakistan protect itself? Blood ties and religion make it difficult for the locals to fight off the Taliban. It's like cancer - unless removed at the onset, the host is doomed.

Well said, Sonal. The difference between fractured state and failed state is indeed hairline. Myanmar is a failed state. Pakistan too would have been a failed state, had the US no geopolitical stake in the country. Pak has crumbled from within, quite like a crumbling house, whose roof cave-in before the walls fall (have you ever wondered why the roof collapses first, when it is built last!) The total collapse of Pakistan is very near. I suggest that we all read the wonderful article by Iyengar uploaded a while back (link: http://www.merinews.com/catFull.jsp?articleID=15751444) It's no coincidence that the title of his story bears the same title as this topic of debate. The similarity is uncanny and the article wonderful!
Ishita : Mar 07, 2009
I partially agree with this. Pakistan is not a failed state but a fractured state. The Taliban is making deeper incursions into its territory. Lahore attacks exemplified it. Besides, the current political turmoil after ban on Nawaz Sharif has worsened the situation. President Zardari seems to be powerless now. The army has got all the reasons to intervene and Mr. Kayani has strengthened his position. The power vacuum has been formed with various parties competing for power. But US and the world is keeping a close vigil on Pak. And US administration will not allow Pakistan to be crumbled into pieces. In this situation, Indian diplomacy can play an influential role.
SonalKulshreshtha : Mar 06, 2009
pakistan was a part of India without India it is worthless I think the people of pakistan should revolt against terrorism or day will come India will have to take over.
rajesh : Mar 06, 2009
Yes not only pakistan but America is also becoing a failed state seeing the stock market of usa which is always going down I hope there sensex won,t reach to zero
Rajesh : Mar 06, 2009
it is very obvious tht pakistan is a failed state. india is a much bigger country with very high population and all kind of religions. Pakistan inspite of being smaller has more problems to tackle because they have fanatics and terrorists more than normal people.
aswathy.c : Mar 06, 2009
My gut feeling is Pakistan Govt. should in all sincerety request His Holiness Shri Dalai Lama to visit the country and offer some good preachings and sermons - perhaps this could turn out to be a turning point for the better for that country - NON VIOLENCE is the key word which Pakistan has to embrace with full sincerety to prosper in all directions!!!!!!!!!
ssingh : Mar 06, 2009
pakistan born the seed of terrorism.......now it seems out of control of govt.....as we can see in swat valley ,govt can't do anything to contol the talibanis & now govt making compromise agreement with them......it shows the failure of govt
Bhupinder : Mar 06, 2009
Pakistan is nothing but a bundle of contradictions. The Zardari government is trying its level best to divert international attention, the latest being that a coup is being planned to topple his so-called democratic government. Strangely, America is eating out of the Pak regime's hand. Had it not been for Big Brother America, Pakistan would have been a failed state long back

Pakistan is/has always been in self-created problems ever since Jinnah died. This was/is ONLY due to rabid selfishness among its politicians who are >>worse than India's/other nations' even in S.Asia. Even India will be in the same boat if we don't watch out. First, let Pak outlaw the Taliban mindset 2. Free your women, dear Pak, from slavery to men. U will top the world, i assure u. I shall help u in the Gandhian Way. Call me at 9953975275 or on my . All women r my sisters, so don't fear, I'm not an Austrian father, OK. Love to u all. ramani

kisi bhi ek insaan ki wajah se hum sare mulk ko toh fail nahi keh sakte, Zardari sahab ki na samjhiyon ka tikra hum pure pakistan par toh nahi undel sakte, kyon ki Asif ali zardari sahab, ko na toh politics ki samajh hai na kursi ki, ke kis kursi par bet kar kese faisle lena chahiye.... mera khayal hai ki unki jagah agar koi aam pakistan ka nagrik hi kursi par bet jaye toh woh shayed unse behtar kaam kar paygah.

Pak is any day smrtr than India. World PR is very good. So it not suffer but India always suffer. Is Lanka team a fool - their team mgmt say they r to play again. I only ask why na, r they not happy that they r alive. Or is Lanka willing to get killed whole team. I think Lanka is more failed than Paki.
