  Is the press really free?

The UN General Assembly declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day to remind governments about the importance of this day. In many parts of the world, press or the voice of the people is gagged. Journalists risk their lives and limbs to unearth truth. A Columbian journalist Guillermo Cano Isaza had taken on the powerful drug barons in his country. He was assassinated in front of his newspaper office El Espectador, on December 17, 1986. The UN confers the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize on a deserving individual, organization or institution for its outstanding contribution to the promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world. In fact, the movement of Citizen Journalism has now emerged as the international the voice of protest. The freedom of the press is also threatened from within, by gatekeeper editors. In India too there have been moves to control and gag the press (read media). Emergency was the darkest period in the history of press freedom in India. Some still feel that the press flouts its freedom. Even in the largest democracy of the world the press is gasping for breath. Is the press really free?

Media has become the puppet of the corporate and glamour world. Now a days specially indian media has nothing to do with the reality and the problems of the real india. So it doesn't matter it gets the freedom or anything.

Attacks on reporters and journalists go on increasingly. A helpless stringer manhandled by the goondas for disclosing their involvement in landmining was the latest incident. Office of a big newpaper firm was attacked by a government owned goonda gang very recently. Tese all show that press has no safety from the antisocials. It is because the government is corrupt. It should go. The press alone can put a end to corrupt practices. The press alone can enlighten and encourage the public against these corrupt politicians. In Kerala the opposition party is inert. Newspapers like Malayala Manorama has brought the corrupt deeds of the Government . So, the newspapers have to grow to the level of Guardians of peace everywhere. The readers will protect them attacks.

Editors and journalists have given up their freedom at the altar of commercialism. These days it is easy to get anything published in the press, if you either have contacts or offer some bribes. We sent a press release to highlight the fact that our son had received a scholarship to study at Harvard, as everyone thought it was a great achievement. None of the papers -- Hindustan Times, Indian Express, The Tribune -- picked it up. But we are quite surprised to find these publishing profiles of students who simply go abroad for a visit, or people who may have topped in an examination in a small regional college. We were told that we should paid a PR firm to get the news published, which shows how crass the journalists have become. We refused to pay. It is a shame that a revered institution, which should keep tabs on the leader and society, have lost out to a few rupees. Is it a surprise that newspapers and magazines are reporting fall in circulation in the ABC survey?

To some extent we cn say that press is free. undre Article 19(1)A press has the rigth of free speach and expression and as the journalists in indian press cover whichever news they want, they conduct sting operations, and do other things to dig out the news. in order to be the top most in the media world everybody is trying to give the most sensational news and breaking news first, these r some of the tactics to gain readership among the masses. but making wrong use of the fundamental rights is a violation of laws, so in order to work with in the laws it is necessary to bind the press with some restrictions and this is given under Article 19 (2) of tne Indian Constitution, that is defamation, contempt of court, contempt of parliament. according to this press is bound and could not publish anything which could defame any person, any organisation or anybody. so according to me it is necessary to have some restrictions, and this is wat we call that press is not free but only to some extent...

Anand Krishnan [ Journalist ] : May 10, 2009
No, it's not free! Our bureacracy has caught it in it;s paws for it's own benefits. The recent past news of Jagdish Tytlor's case and the journalist Jarnail Singh's statement, what does it show? The word freedom means to be free of boundations, to be liberated; is our press free of these two? No!
sarbjit : May 08, 2009
Yes. It is as free as it should be. And it still messes things up. Don't make it an intellectual question. It's simply about the accountability of those who sell their brand of 'truth'.
HemRaj Singh : May 08, 2009
In a truly democratic nation, political candidates have equality of opportunity to present their ideas to the people. To this end, the news media has the obligation to bring all prospective candidates to the attention of the nation’s people. If the news media focuses attention only on those candidates that pay a high price for advertisement, then we cease to have a genuine democracy. In this case, we have a façade of democracy where the so called advertisers use available news media merely to make a mockery of democracy. So, if media do not observe ethics of profession and becomes very means of destroying the democracy rather freedom of media regulated. At least for a country such as India, media should not be given free hand.
nagendra : May 08, 2009
Press is not free today. A lot of boundations imposed upon Press. This is the time to think this matter on priority matter. We are weel aware about the fact that this is the main piller of Democracy. But to day this piller is crushing by Government Rules, Politicians and Reporters/Editors themselves also. An honestly journalism can save this danger only. In fact we can say that City Journalism is a power to fight for the freedom of Press. This is also advisablet to give proper space to the city journalist and identity to upward this movment.

It is not a wonder in the post liberalisation (1991) the press in India has become a voiceless spectators since they enjoy advertisements not alone from Industrial houses, but also from governments and ruling parties. Ample example is INC's ads for this election and its length. Secondly, in depth reports vanished from the all sections of media because civil society itself not much cared about their destiny and short sighted about future. Certainly silent consumerist society is a culprit in the on going tussle between ethical Vs unethical groups. How Satyam kept the secret of cooking of books for seven years without any disturbance? Isn't not a shame for the conscious society? Unless there is mass upsurge or demand for neutral reports from the media which can be done through rejection of biased media and encouraging non partisan media groups, evolve Indian press cannot be FREE.

Journalist have limitation of risking their life. Press can never be free any more
swaminathanpattabhiramn : May 04, 2009
To a great extent the press in india is free but it should understand its power and to sustain its freedom it has to voluntarily set some guidelines this can enable them to remain free not only here but the entire world.

We, the journalists have the real freedom in India.Otherwise Sathyam scam could not have come into the lime light.Of course, the journalists have to undergo some ordeals as is the case with every other profession.

pressis not only free but press is more currept than other pillers of democracy. those people related to press they can express than press is more currept. I seen more journalist which was currept and cheap. In rural area there aremany journalist in illitrate, drinker and blackmaler.
Dr. Deepak Acharya : May 04, 2009
In India, freedom of press is there. Rather, recently, misuse of freedom of press is being done by some agents in their commercial interest. This must be stopped. The reporting should be neutral irrespective of cast, creed, religion financial status etc.
Pritis C Majumdar : May 04, 2009
Yes, the Press definitely is free in India. Why would there be so many media houses existing to date if the press was actually being gagged? The problem with the Indian media industry is not freedom, but manipulation of truth! The very fact that literally every political party and business magnate in India have their own channel and publication stand testimony to the statement that gatekeeping is not the issue, but the need to self-promote is! People do raise voice against it, every now and then, but to what avail? The real question here is, Do we let ourselves to be led by the media or do we lead the media?
Padma Venkatraman : May 03, 2009
IN india there is virtually nothing called press freedom. what we extole in the name of press freedom is a vestige of our wishful thinking, had we been' what we have here freedom to oppress. almsot all press organizations are agents, and they voice the concerns of their masters. press has numberable things to talk about, write about and broadcast and air about. but what we listen, read and watch is but messages manipulations. barring a few portals like the ones in the net, like merinews, the rest are henchmen ofevil.

I think Press is free to operste sting operations but has no power to put the people behind bars.It has the power to raise the issues of common man but it has no power to change there plight. It is not united its broken into fragments . It is a puppet in hands of police and politics they don't allow it a freedom because they fear themselves

deear sir, The press is supposed to be fair and unbiased. But now we the common people are loosing the press except some news papers who still maintain ethics. Look at the state of Andhra Pradesh. Sakshi is for congress. Enadu for TDP, Prajasakti for communists. vartha is dying because of lack of advertisements earlier it was for congress later swithed to TDP and now no where. Deccan chronical is a paper of advertisements and for congress. If the press is ment for political parties they must be banned. If any news that is given a false report must be punished. If they give correct report they must be awarded. The press should not be over enthusiastic. it must be realistic and give quick information to the public. regards raptors

Press in India is largely free but presently there are attempts by people who have vested interest to gag the media. Along with this, Management has also started to influence the editorial decisions. Gatekeeper managers now have more say in selection and display/ broadcasting of the news, which is not a good sign for the so called fourth pillar of democracy. More importantly there has been a decline in the standard and ethics followed by journalists. Today journalists are baught and there is an erosion of trust in them. Recently, in Loksabha elections in Lucknow, one condidate from a political party obliged several journalists from different media houses and distributed cash. His own newspaper crossed all limits and portrayed him as the winning candidate. This propaganda was so blatant and cheap that it backfired and now he must be cursing himself for what all he did in his disperation to reach Loksabha. So in my opinion, we journalists must ask ourselves how ethical and true saviour of democracy are we, instead of always shouting about the freedom! It is more urgent now to bring our house in order and bring back some descipline and ethics in the profession.

The history of press in India is filled with stories of struggle and sacrifice. Indian press, in the pre-independence era, had a mission to achieve freedom. Most of the major leaders of the freedom movement were journalists. They were for the mouthpieces of the masses and society. But after 60 years of freedom, can it be said that media is really free to rise the voice of grass root people? According to the Constitution, we can say yes! We have the right to expression and media can use it for the people of India. But, practically media is not free to do so. Freedom of expression forms an essential basis for democratic functioning of a society. In a democracy, every journalist has the right to express his or her views on public issues and their views need not necessarily support the views of dominant groups or influential personalities in power. Attacking an editor for expressing his views over a government’s decision is highly condemnable. Press is regarded as the ‘watchdog’ of democracy. Unfortunately, there is scanty regard for its freedom in India, supposed to be the world’s largest democracy. The recent attack makes it evident that democracy in India has still not matured, even after five decades of independence.

In India, the press commands reasonable freedom. Ofcourse, in many parts of the world the press is not free and face resentment from the ruling governments. The best examples are Pakistan and Sri Lanka where journalists were not allowed free hand to expose human rights violations. But in India press is not only free but is doing a commendable job. However, these days press is also becoming commercialized which is very much visible these days in their elections coverage and pre-poll coverages. Infact such coverages sometimes influence the readers' opinion. Though the influence is less than 5% but biased opinion is no opinion and sometimes 5% also becomes important in poll wins or losses.

ya i m agree with this sataement that prees has a free in their work and the r very loyeal the best example we would see in the mubai attack where all done their work very well so raise the question to the freedom of media is totally wrong.if we will do so that mean we disrespect to our law which says that media is a fourth pillal of nation.

Freedom exists so long as it does not harm the vested interest of owner, his family &political party. New generation journalists command too much freedom for themselves ( not for their organisation) by widely covering big(?) events like kinder garton social & neglecting events of intellectual & social importance.

Whether there is freedom of the press or not, at least Citizen Journalists are doing a good job due to the op provided by merinews.com. the conceiver of this idea of merinews team needs to be congratulated for this noble endeavour. There is NOTHING in this world which can have freedom. If you freely express your opinions most probably it will hurt other people's sentiments which is infringing on other people's freedom. You cannot have freedom of expression and not be hurting other people's sentiments. So is the problem with PRESS and MEDIA. They can speak vulgarly about hinduism and hindu's in general and cannot speak with the same tone against muslims, christians and other minorities.. So the truth is press is NOT free.
www.fourthplane.com : Jun 28, 2009
Freedom of Press is a myth. A newspaper or a TV channel cannot be free. Purity is of no value. It does not work in real life. Press should play a role in forming public opinion. So the freedom of press is not possible. Newspaper houses take side. Otherwise , people will not read them. Bacon says that ornament cannot be made from pure gold. Impurity gives strength to pure gold. Similarly, newspapers with pure ideological principles cannot motivate people. Well, in that case the newspapers will become meaningless. People wont understanding anything.

The mass media particularly the visual media has gained a lot of importance in the last few years....A journalist can now openly unearth crime and corruption. As press is the voice of the public, there's no denying that it enjoys immense freedom.Though our political sysyem is such that no body associated with the government works independently but the mass media has become independent in the past few years

my country had been ruined since the days educates and media had become selfish.no press if partial today, they are not free othrwise the state of our country would have been different today. media are also running after money now a days. how many male practices by the nominated candidates of the congress, bjp or bsp had been reported during the course of election. simply nothing as compared to the male practices adopted by them. at one side they are saying that congress candidate is going to win and at the same page they are saying that BJP candidate leading. these are nothing but saleable news which are to deceive the readers. now i have decided to launch my own newspaper from june onwards.

IT IS NOT REALLY FREE. THERE IS EXPLOITATION FOR MONEY, POWER, GAIN, COMFORT ETC. EXCEPT A FEW, SERVICE AND IDEALOGY IS COMPRIMESED. SELF-DISCIPLINE AND HONESTY ARE AT PERIL IN MOST OF THE CASES.
singaraja : May 11, 2009
Press in our country cannot be fully free as most of these are owned by this or that house. The newspaper houses have thier individual code of conduct. Some are more and some others are less biased. But biased are all of them. Only these days , citizen journalism is to some extent trying to be free and unbiased as most of the articles are published even if they are not fully in conformity with one particular viewpoint. The press is the called the fourth estate. Democratisation of the media is the urgent need of the hour. In the presentation of news too much of biasedness may misguide the people. Newspapers are to show what is happening. Journalists are not to mould the public opinion regarding politics. But they can form public opinion regarding social evils such as Ragging, smoking in public places, Corruption at high level, global warming. There are challenging tasks for the journalists. For example, they must write articles on issues which may sometime go even against the party in power. Today power corrupts , and absolute power has corrupted the party absolutely. The journalists free from any external influence should come forward to raise their loud voice against these parties and politicians.
Dr.Ratan Bhattacharjee : May 08, 2009
Corruption exists if there is a close loop i.e. each and every individual is involved in the loop. Press is part of it. They are not doing social work out there. They are eqally interested in money and their TRPs. so whatever helps them to do so is the truth. It has been an established norm that worst news sell more than worse news and worse news generate more than bad news. so good news are out of the picture.

I can only speak for the American Continent where Press Freedom has suffered major setbacks. In Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicraragua, Ecuador, and the USA: The Press cannot be objective since it would cost the journalist his or her job or life. The only spots where there is Press Freedom is in Costa Rica, Panama, Belize, and Canada.

The media is not free as it does not do true reporting it seems to play to the gallery. At times it has to pander to the government's apathy and at times simply ignore the ground reality. I remember visiting Kashmir, the land of my ancestors, and was deeply hurt that i was labelled an 'Indian', the outsider, now the hurt was for the passing of the buck by the press, this anti- Indian stance. This Indian bashing was not represented by our own press thus subverting the interests of the minority Kashiri hindu community, the brain washing and the promotion of radical and bigotic thinking abetted terrorism and coercion of larger interests of nationalism.

Media in India is very much free from Government Control and is very powerful to bring out whatever they want. It is only their private ties, which make them restrict or behave in a particular way! The independent Media with only attachment to love and respect for country is desirable and can do wonders in the present scenirio of corrupt politicians!.

World Press is manipulated by many bigwigs. Press also manipulates itself by filtering out what it cant sell. I have been trying to expose Vijay Mallya's corruption and accumulation of wealth from cheating Public, but not even single press reporter has come forward.
C L Agrawal : May 03, 2009
From my heart I cant say that Press have complete freedom. According to me.....the Press have freedom only to some extend, as the news are censored or controled by some Political hands, but in other end Many journalists are strugling to unveil the truth. And we are forced to sail in wrong direction in this heavy Tempest. We are not geting proper justice too. Instead of that we are geting Just - Ice.. So we have to stop this influence of black politics in Press and it leads to Negative journalism. So at any cause we have to open the door for Positive journalism, with Truth & Justice in our way. Struggle and Unity as passion. And thru this passion we have to goahead for giving power to people.

No, the press is not at all free. The news r censored by the top boss. Therefore the news which comes to the public is most of the time distorted and not true. The journalists are all quite at the risk of their life. So what even if it is the fourth pillar of the government? No freedom thus no justice comes to the citizens.
Nupur Roy : May 03, 2009
I feel the press has all the freedom it requires but the press is no more the honest voice it used to be. The media are sponsored by influential houses and use the press to present biased and manipulated versions of facts. It is becoming increasingly difficult to believe the stories written in newspapers or tv channels. Its money power only.
beena singh : May 03, 2009
Press was the voice of people. Now we can only hear chaos of people but there is no one to raise a issue.Press only hears the sound of cash. You can smell from cover page what is the content of paper. Our brave soldiers are give a four lined space in 4th/5th page.Page 3 is all dedicated to over bollywood. The last pages are kept for sports(cricket). There is only a small space some where we call it world news.We only read what media wants to sell or what makes the papers selling go up.There is no news which is motive less or which cover the whole truth. We only hear or read half news cause press never carries everything we only read that there was a blast. we never come to know after that what is happening. There is no single news paper or no writer who can provoke the readers to fight against the corruption.Am sorry to say that the profession that was mean to serve Humanity has now changed to business.
SujitKumar Sonkar(BaBa) : May 03, 2009
No. Press Freedom is a mirage. Press Freedom is effected more due to its ownerhip by big corporate houses who are basically enemies of freedom than by the political class. However, it is nice to see UN declaring May 3 as World Press Freedom Day - though UN itself is a gagged institution working at the behest of the big and mighty.
Pradeep Asranna : May 03, 2009
I may not be able to comment on the world scenarIo; but in India the Press is Free. they are let loose to that extend that they mould public opinion. The press decide what the people should know. Most of the Press is controlled by vested interest. They dictate terms. WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA are not aware of what is happening to them. Take any issue. The people does not get an opportunity to know what actually happened. The press mix up the information to suit the existance of vested interests. I wish to quote example; but am scared to touch any well known issue. So I will take the example of Right to Information Act 2005 of India. Have you come acros any news that can make the RTI Act effective. The press give coverage only to those information on RTI Act when any dignitory say its misuse. Please tell me as to how can an RTI Act can be misused. Has any newpaper or media has given any coverage to the atrocities and burial process of the RTI Act resorted too by the Information Commissions. Has any press published a word of the cries of the RTI Activists against the Commissions or their pendency state ? In nutshelL the press is too freE in India that it has enslaved WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA. The requirement of to-day is toliberate WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA from the clutches of the Press.

Press freedom means conveying truthfully all the news. Today there are many direct and indirect controls. The owners, the marketing bosses, government agencies, politicians etc all have interest in what, and more importantly how, the news should be presented. sensationalism prodies uncalled for headlines. Hence real freedom is not fully prsent
A B MEHTA : May 02, 2009
The press in India has always been partisan, and this time politicians have specially started the news papers and channels to belittle their opposition and show their side with all the hype. In Andhra Pradesh Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy's son Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is also a Congress party contestant fron Cuddapah, has started 'Saakshi' a Telugu daily and 'Saakshi TV, a local news channel to counter the famous telugu daily 'Enaadu' and news channel 'ETV2'. Mr. Ramoji Rao, the owner of "Enaadu' and 'ETV2' is favourable to TDP. So how free is our press? and How can it be if the politicians theselves are going to establish them? Freedom of press is a funny word today.
