Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is down in the pits. Though it was in the sixth position in the last IPL season, its steady decline and downfall to the bottom of the chart show that nothing went right with it.
The face-off between Saurav Ganguly and John Buchanan, following the multi-captaincy theory; the buzz about the mystery blogger; Aakash Chopra and Sanjay Bangar packed off; the divide in the team – apparent both on and off field, made juicy copy in the media.
Shahrukh Khan too is upset. He decided to stay back in India, when he came here to cast his vote, till the team wins. But KKR is now known as the most glamourous team, with lackluster performance.
Khan had earlier said that KKR was easily the most successful IPL franchise, making Rs 13 crore (Rs 130 million) profit last year. However, his costs trebled last year owing to interventions from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Cricket Association of Bengal.
While Khan’s interest is plain business, Buchanan’s plans were to decimate the team, rather than unite it. Many feel that Buchanan should owe responsibility, that his multi-captaincy theory, now seen more as a smokescreen to oust Ganguly, as Brendon McCullum, though out of form, was not replaced. The Australian coach of KKR should be replaced by a more sensible, preferably Indian coach. Buchanan hatao, Ganguly lao is the buzz these days. Should Buchanan be sacked and Ganguly be made the captain of KKR?
