Lalu Prasad Yadav, some say, is being paid back in the same coin. He arm twisted the Congress, an ally in the UPA, in the run up to the general elections 2009, in Bihar. Not only did he push the major partner against the wall, he went a step further and announced the creation of the Fourth Front, with Ram Vilas Paswan and Mulayam Singh Yadav.
All this while he was still a Union minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet. He wanted to butter his toast on both sides.
This move by Lalu and his friends was seen by the top Congress bosses as the early seeds of dangerous dissent, almost similar to the creation of a state within a state. Also, it created a lot of embarrassment for the Congress party. In fact, the Lalu-Paswan combine agreed to give just three seats to the Congress party in Bihar. They wanted their pound of flesh, blood and all.
Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) drew a blank, and Lalu too was severely humbled. In UP, Mulayam too was forced to eat the humble pie, after the results were declared. The Fourth Front members were in for a rude shock. The voters authored the political obituary of the Fourth Front and punished them for betrayal.
While some feel that keeping Lalu in his place, clipping his wings serves him right, others opine that the major partner, the Congress party, should be magnanimous and forgive Lalu for his sins. They should welcome him into the UPA fold. What’s your take: Should Congress forgive Lalu Prasad Yadav?
