The scientists conducted the biggest ever scientific research on September 10, 2008, in order to re-create the Big Bang Theory. Speculations were rife that the experiment would spell doom to the universe. More so, a whopping amount of nearly ten billion dollar was spent on the experiment, thus making it the most expensive and largest scientific experiment in the history. But, let's pause and think, the amount of money spent on this experiment could have fed millions world over.
Statistics reveals that almost half the world - over three billion people - live on less than $2.50 a day. According to UNICEF, 26,500-30,000 children die each day due to hunger and disease, caused by abject poverty. Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen. Based on enrollment data, about 72 million children of primary school age in the developing world were not in school in 2005; out of which 57 per cent of them were girls. Hence, poverty is the biggest threat that the world is facing today at large.
Is it worth spending such a huge amount on an experiment while millions of people are dying due to hunger and poverty? |
