The first satellite TV broadcast celebrates its 50th anniversary

Today, Thursday, July 12, is the 50th anniversary of the first satellite television broadcast. On this day in 1962, a short program containing images of the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower, remarks from President John F. Kennedy and highlights of a Phillies-Cubs baseball game were transmitted from Andover, Maine, to the Pleumeur-Bodou Telecom Center in Brittany, France -- a feat that marked the beginning of today's era of instant global communications.
