Twitter - Happy Governor of Meghalya blathers out again....

Naim Naqvi

Shri Tathagata Roy is currently serving as the Governor of Meghalaya since August 2018. He is well known for his absurd statements. In the past, Roy also briefly had held the additional charge of the office of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.

He is an engineer by training and a former professor of Construction Engineering at Jadavpur University. After leaving government service Roy became an RSS worker in 1986. He joined the BJP in 1990. He replaced Ashim Ghosh as president of the West Bengal state unit of the BJP in 2002. He stood as a candidate for election to the Lok Sabha in 2009 from the North Kolkata constituency of West Bengal and lost. He stood as the BJP candidate again from the South Kolkata parliamentary constituency in 2014 earning 25.29% of the total votes and  Subrata Bakshi from All India Trinamool Congress won with a margin of 136,339 votes.

Luck favoured him and he was selected as the Governor of Tripura on 12 May 2015. He was transferred and appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya in August 2018.

The governors and lieutenant-governors are appointed by the president for a term of five years. The governor of a state is the repository of the executive power of the States which are exercised by him in accordance with the Constitution of India.

Now will the President of India listen to what he has recently said? In the aftermath of the Pulwama terror strike, Meghalaya Governor Tathagatha Roy called for the boycott of Kashmir and Kashmiri products.

He tweeted: "An appeal from a retired colonel of the Indian Army: Don't visit Kashmir, don't go to Amarnath for the next 2 years. Don't buy articles from Kashmir emporia or Kashmiri tradesman who come every winter. Boycott everything Kashmiri. I am inclined to agree."

Kashmir is an integral part of India and the people of Kashmir are as Indian as Tathgata Roy. Who is he to deny them the right of existence and survive? The tweet comes at a time when there are reports of Kashmiris being harassed across the country.

Among his many controversial statements is one from November 15, 2015: "People have the right to eat what they want, but the scales would be even when Muslims have pork in the open."

In April the same year, he urged 'secular', 'politically-correct' Hindus to polarize or 'prepare to be annihilated or converted'.

On June 18, 2017 he had twitted:

"Syama Prasad Mookerjee wrote in his diary on 10/1/1946: "The Hindu-Muslim problem won't be solved without a Civil War". So much like Lincoln!"

"Hindus of West Bengal: either chuck your 'secular', 'politically correct' values and polarise. Or prepare to be either annihilated or converted," Roy tweeted in April, 2015.

The list is pretty long. However, his attack on secularism is a glaring example of his misplaced ideology which is in total contrast to the Constitution of India.

"Multiculturalism in Europe is like Secularism in India. It means Muslims stick to their beliefs and custom. Others will adjust," he had tweeted in October 2017.

Isn't a situation where the Governor of an Indian State has been directly challenging the Constitution of India that he takes oath to protect?

Hitting out at Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy over his statement in which he has asked people to "boycott everything Kashmiri", the last Sadr-e-Riyasat of Kashmir State and a senior Congress leader Dr Karan Singh has said it was unfortunate that there are people ready to exploit tragedies. "Pulwama (attack) was tragedy enough. But it will further deepen the tragedy if people like Shri Roy make these kind of utterly irresponsible and unexpected statements," Dr Singh said during a debate on a news channel on Tuesday evening.

Will the Government of India act in the interest of the nation and remove this recalcitrant person occupying the highest seat of State?

I personally knew Tathagatjee. He is a very learned gentleman & an excellent engineer. However, In the last couple of years, his tweets are really horrible & don't match to his original personality. He is the elder brother of Sougat Roy of TMC. he most of the times advised his brother not to talk about any provocating things in politics. But now...I am really confused about what happened to him.

Thanks for your comment Acharya Ji. We all know that politicians would come and go but the Indians have to live together for ever. Anyone who spreads hate and violence should be checked out ideologically, politically and officially. It applies to everyone.
