The Ocean Project (OP), a UN agency that coordinates the global observance of World Oceans Day (WED), has announced 'We Have the Power to Protect the Ocean' as the theme to highlight the power of collectivism to protect our oceans.
On the eve of WED this year, the OP's release stated, "On June 8th 2014, people in communities around the globe will celebrate this year?s World Oceans Day with the theme of 'Together we have the power to protect the ocean'. Hundreds of events are planned to help people get involved in solutions for a healthy ocean and society ? by supporting clean energy choices, trash-free coasts and beaches, sustainable seafood, and more."
WED provides a unique opportunity once a year on June 8 to stress the importance of the ocean as the most important component of the earth's bio-sphere. The main causes of concern related to the ocean at the moment are the acidification, pollution, depletion of aquatic resources, rising sea levels and overfishing.
According to OP, the observance needs to become a strong rallying point for raising awareness and promoting action for healthier ocean through green and clean energy choices for the sea, coasts and beaches. We need to stress the sustainable seafood practices to protect our bio-sphere.
On the occasion of WED-2014, the Op has urged the world community to initiate actions to reduce marine debris by eliminating junk mail; obtain a renewable energy credit to help combat ocean acidification; and spread the word about sustainable seafood.
