Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh guru and the founder of the Sikh religion, was born on the full moon day in the Hindi month of Kartik. Guru Nanak Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti is celebrated by the Sikh community all over the world and is one of the most important festivals in the Sikh calendar. For two days and nights preceding the festival, the 'Granth Sahib' (Holy Book) is read and on the day of the festival.
