First non Communist government in West Bengal after 34 years
Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress dethroned the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front government in the West Bengal assembly polls after 34 years. In the 294-seat West Bengal assembly, Mamata Banerjee's party won 215 seats. The 34-year rule of Left Front government in West Bengal was the longest serving government in a democratic set-up. During this rule of the LF government in the state, Jyoti Basu served the state from 1977 to 2000, and holds the record for being the longest-serving Chief Minister in India. In 2000 CPI (M) politburo member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee elected the CM of the state and served till 2011. Mamata Banerjee floated her party in 1998.
