United States: Since the 1896 Athens Olympics to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the United States has participated in the Summer Olympics 25 times and won 2296 medals including 929 Gold, 729 Silver and 638 Bronze medals. The United States has participated in all modern Olympic Games, except the 1980 Mascow Olympics, which it boycotted. In the 1984 Olympics, hosted in Los Angeles, the U.S. athletes won 173 medals including 83 Gold medals. The country has hosted Olympics four times. The U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps is the leading gold medalist for his country as well as among the list of Olympians having the most Olympic gold medals in one's career. He won 14 golds in 2004 and 2008 summer Olympics. Another swimmer Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis are among the top athletes and Olympic gold medalists - with nine Gold each in their account.
