This was the time when rock music in India sprouted. And, it originated from Bangalore and the eastern states of the country. During this period, the Western music in India gained accolades. The Beatles, The Doors and the Byrds drove influences from the Indian classical music to reinforce the psychedelia in their music.
1980s and 1990s:
By the 1980s India started diversifying in different fields of music ranging from soft, rock n roll, pop, hard rock to metal. 1984 saw the beginning of a band, which was later renamed as the Indian Ocean. The same year witnessed the formation of Rock Machine, the name was changed to Indus Creed in 1990s. In early 1990s, MTV, a music channel, was launched in Indian. And, it changed the tastes and thinking of Indian music lovers. The channel, by holding competitions, encouraged different bands to strengthen their style and focus more on different types of rock, like death metal, hard rock, alternative metal and prog rock, etc.
The bands formed in this decade include the Parikrama, the Indian Ocean, the Indus Creed, the Moksha, the Euphoria, the Orange Street, the Cactus, etc. These bands started diversifying in their styles by using newest techniques and influences from the west. The bands formed during this period concentrated more on inculcating metal rock, hard, punk in their music with a touch of Indian classic. The fusion of the large variety of rock with an Indian touch is considered to be one of the most unique and loved Indian styles of rock.
2000 – till now:
This Indian sub-genre of music is the blend of the Western rock style with Indian style of music. Bands such as Bangalore-based the Millennium, the Pin Drop Violence, the Fossils, the Cassini’s Division, the Kinky Ski Munky and the Demonic Resurrection are some of the bands that have specialised in blending heavy metal with the Indian music style.
