United Nations General Assembly announced May 3rd 1993 as World Press Freedom Day which was followed by the recommendation adopted at 26th session of UNESCO's general conference held in 1991, to make People and Press understand the power of Freedom of Expression . It also reminds the government of their due duties to uphold the right of Freedom and Expression which is stated under Article-19 on Universal Deceleration of Human Rights.
The potential of media in fostering dialogue, mutual understanding and reconciliation is the chosen topic of UNESCO World Press Freedom Day 2009 to be celebrated on 2-3 May 2009. UNESCO is organising the event from 2nd May to 3rd May 2009 in capital of Qatar, Doha. The event is being jointly organised by UNESCO and Doha center of Media Freedom.
This day, the 3rd of May is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day, the day pays regards to all those unknown and known journalists who have served their entire life to bring News to your home with Truth Passion and Commitment. The fundamental principle speaks that we are required to evaluate press freedom to defend press from any barrier coming towards their independence.
Free and Independent press has rarely been recognised as prime dimension to eradicate social issues and prevailing dilemma across the world. Free and independent media solely carries the objective of sharing the information in order to attain flawless governance and create awareness for people, helping in outflow of accountability and eradication corruption, it should also boost the relative knowledge of the uninformed.
Free and Independent media are also associated with taking up the challenge of recognition of Human Rights to form a strong society, providing and making citizens aware of their rights and freedom to express and avail those rights with free mind in free country, there should be complete political transparency provided to people in order to know how and who governs their nation.
These challenges and opportunities are on the same line in the Darwin's theory of the 'survival of the fittest'. The closure of the 'National Herald' is a clear example of what can go wrong if a newspaper cannot keep pace with the times.
